USCIS Biometrics Appointment: What to Expect and How to Prepare

If you have filed an immigration application with USCIS, you will likely receive a biometrics appointment notice (Form I-797C) directing you to visit an Application Support Center (ASC) for fingerprinting, photographs, and a digital signature. This is a standard step in processing most immigration benefits, and missing or mishandling it can delay your case significantly.

J. Lee & Associates Law Group guides immigration clients through every step of the process, including biometrics preparation, across metro Atlanta and Georgia.

What Is a Biometrics Appointment?

A biometrics appointment allows USCIS to collect your fingerprints, photograph, and signature for identity verification and background checks. USCIS uses this information to run FBI criminal background checks and verify your identity against existing immigration records. Per 8 CFR § 103.16, USCIS may require biometrics for any benefit request where identity verification is necessary.

Which Applications Require Biometrics?

  • Form I-485 (Adjustment of Status)
  • Form I-765 (Employment Authorization)
  • Form I-131 (Travel Document)
  • Form N-400 (Naturalization)
  • Form I-751 (Remove Conditions on Residence)
  • Form I-589 (Asylum)
  • Form I-821 (TPS)
  • Form I-90 (Green Card Renewal)

Some applicants, particularly those under 14 or over 79, may be exempt from fingerprinting but still need a photograph.

What to Bring to Your Biometrics Appointment

  • Form I-797C (your biometrics appointment notice) — this is mandatory
  • A valid photo ID: passport, green card, state driver's license, EAD, or national ID card
  • Your I-94 arrival record if available
  • Any previous biometrics notices if this is a reuse or rescheduled appointment

Do not bring food, large bags, weapons, or electronic devices into the ASC. Facilities have strict security protocols and limited waiting areas.

What Happens at the Appointment

  1. Check-in: Present your I-797C and photo ID at the reception desk. Staff verify your identity and appointment.
  2. Fingerprinting: A technician scans all ten fingerprints digitally. The process takes about 5 minutes. Ensure your fingers are clean and free of cuts or bandages that might affect scan quality.
  3. Photograph: A digital photograph is taken for your immigration records and any card or document that will be issued.
  4. Signature: You provide a digital signature that will appear on your EAD, green card, or other document.
  5. Completion: You receive a stamp on your I-797C confirming completion. Keep this stamped notice with your records.

The entire visit typically takes 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the facility's volume that day.

What If You Cannot Attend Your Scheduled Appointment?

If you cannot attend on the scheduled date, you have options:

  • Walk-in before your date: Many ASCs accept walk-ins. Call the facility or check the InfoPass system to confirm.
  • Reschedule: Send a written request to the ASC or contact the USCIS Contact Center at 1-800-375-5283 before your appointment date. Include a copy of your I-797C and explain the reason for rescheduling.
  • After your date: If you missed your appointment, go to the ASC as soon as possible as a walk-in. Bring your I-797C and a brief explanation. Most ASCs will accommodate missed appointments within a reasonable window.

Warning: Failing to appear for biometrics without rescheduling can result in USCIS considering your application abandoned, leading to denial.

Tips for a Smooth Biometrics Experience

  • Arrive 15 minutes early
  • Wash and dry your hands thoroughly before the appointment (lotions, dirt, or moisture can affect fingerprint scans)
  • Avoid wearing excessive hand jewelry
  • If you have a skin condition affecting your fingertips, bring a doctor's note
  • Dress conservatively as your photograph may appear on official documents

Georgia ASC Locations

USCIS operates Application Support Centers in metro Atlanta, including locations in Atlanta (Peachtree City area), and appointments may also be scheduled at facilities in neighboring states depending on volume. Your I-797C will specify your assigned location.
